 바람과 함께 날다! Fly with the wind! On the site of Gangneung 2006 Formula Windsurfing World Championships & International Windsurfing Championships, butterflies wave up and down the blue sea. They don't just wave, they slide down the water. They are windsurfers who are amazed by their own speed. They speed up to 50km/h, 60㎞/h, or 80㎞/h or more. They surf by the wind blowing but end up going faster than the natural force. As it's on the water, it feels even faster up to 3 times. Can there be any more thrill or excitement than this!? Windsurfing. Windsurfers say that once you get going, it's hard to stop. It's just like being on a drug. That's why it's always followed by subtitles such as 'The blossom in water sports.' Now anyone can enjoy the speed of windsurfing in Gangnueng Kyungpo beach at the World Championship starting on the 1st of September till the 10th of September. Over 500 sailors form 40 countries participate in this world most prestigeous competition. 40,000 surf lovers from over 200 sailing clubs in country will also come to participate. Windsurfing was first initiated by Hoyle Schweitger and Jim Drake in 1967 when they tried putting a sail up on a normal wave boards to double the speed and thrill. In Korea, windsurfing was first introduced by late Hee-Bum Kwon in the late 70s who was former Korea Windsurfing Association (KWSA) vice president and International Sailing Federation (ISAF) when he crossed the Straits of Korea in 1980 all by himself. After 2 years, Kwon crossed the Dover Channel between England and France all by himself where he set a new history to Korean Windsurfing. #0 years have passed and Korean surfers have mounted up to 40,000. Jeju island, Ulsan, and the southern coast of Korea have become favourable spots and inland spots are most recognized by Gangneung, the eastern coast, Sokcho, and lake in Chuncheon and in here windsurfers have increased. One of the strong points is where there's water and wind that's all there has to be. The fact that it's a environment friendly sport which is non-mechanical floating device that only relies on board and sail is even more tempting. Main classes of boards are Formula and Mistral, and RS:X and recently RS:X have been chosen as the 2008 Beijing Olympic class after Mistral for the first time in 2006 Doha Asian Games. The windsurfing gears are consisted of a main board which is 2.85~3.72m long and 7.4~12.5㎡ wide. How to get on board is to put you're two feet on the board and strap yourself closer to the sail with harness and by holding on to the boom to adjust to the wind speed and enjoy the fast speed. In Gangneung there is Korean Sea Explorers of Korea Gangwon Council (placed in Gangneung Joomunjin) where there is a surfing school, and there's also chance to take a part by joining a nearby club. After 2∼3 days of training it is possible to rule the wind. There's no need to worry if you are not a swimmer because in windsurfing you wear life jackets and wet suits. You can sail between March and November, but manias don't mind surfing in winter. In KOrea, spring and autumn is the best season.
